The SJ Morse Company is a full-service manufacturer of premier quality architectural wood veneer-faced panels for projects requiring custom made plywood. Steve Morse founded SJ Morse as a woodworking company in 1979. He started by doing custom architectural millwork, high end cabinets and casework, and one of a kind production furniture. The company moved to West Virginia in 1983 and arrived in Capon Bridge in 1987. In the late 1980’s SJ Morse began producing veneer panels for its own jobs. As demand increased the company shifted focus to veneer panel production.
Steve Morse and his employees are committed to the principles of sustainable forestry and to the responsible use of our natural resources. In 2001, this commitment resulted in the company receiving its Forest Stewardship Certification (FSC) Chain-of-Custody Certification for its veneer panel products. SJ Morse was one of the first forest product companies in West Virginia to receive FSC certification. The company also uses low VOC and HAPS adhesives and cores.
In 2007 SJ Morse initiated construction of additional manufacturing space to keep up with the growing demand from the green building sector for their products. In keeping with their commitment to environmental excellence and to providing a high quality workplace for their employees, SJ Morse used LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building standards to design their 4,800 square foot addition. The addition uses natural lighting, Energy Star-rated HVAC and overhead lighting systems and in-floor radiant heating to reduce energy costs (for the base building) by approximately 50%. SJ Morse also upgraded the dust collector and air compressor systems to optimize air and power requirements and improve waste and dust handling.
NCIF is working with the company to identify and develop markets for its byproducts and to upgrade its inventory control and cost accounting systems to meet the needs of its planned growth.
SJ Morse is expected to create 7 full-time jobs over the next three years.
